Dinner@The Bertinet Kitchen, Bath

Not just dinner, but six courses.  Not just a chef, but a masterchef. Not just a restaurant, but the kitchen of a bread guru. The evening held a certain promise……..

Rock learned many of her bread making skills here at the Bertinet Kitchen, a specialist cookery school run by Richard Bertinet.  From time to time Richard hosts a supper club and on this evening the winner of Masterchef 2010, Dhruv Baker, was going to show us what he can do.

The first dish combined Richard’s fabulous sourdough toast with Dhruv’s Keralan crab.  The crab tasted fresh and was lightly and cleverly spiced.  One down, just five more courses to enjoy.

Size is important in many things and with food it is crucial.  When the second course arrived, a risotto style couscous dish described as mushroom & truffle fregola, there was enough of it to feed most of the biblical five thousand.  There were only 28 of us in the room!  Feeling slightly ungracious and impolite, Rock and I left around three quarters of the fregola – we both needed the stomach capacity for other things.

The supper club gives you a chance to meet others with an interest in good food. We met some great people – from a chap who makes foghorns to a lady who organises schooltrips to exotic parts of the world!

Next we had bellypork.  With a wafer thin crust of crackling that snapped and crunched when you bit into it, this was a winner.  A croquette of confit pork, vanilla mash, apple chips, salsa verde and flavours of maple and calvados made this a perfect Winter dish.

The chocolate and almond torte was rich and moist and accompanied by amaretto cream.  Then a little Robbiola cheese on Richard’s caraway sourdough rye toast with fig, apple & lemon marmalade.  The final tasting adventure involved Richard’s infamous rum soaked prunes that are regularly served with coffee.  Even after using a degree of self control – I still felt like I’d overeaten!

Apart from the minor issue of the fregola overload, Druhv did a fabulous job.

The supper club is a great place for people who like good food– see the www.thebertinetkitchen.com for more info.

Wade and Rock are a UK based couple who love good food and wildlife and love travelling to find it. Wade does most, but not all, of the writing and the photography. Rock shares the eating experience and tells Wade when planned posts fall short on sense or style or taste. In the opinion of Wade (and many of our friends) she is also a fabulous baker. WadeandRockandFood mainly consists of reviews of restaurants and pubs we have recently visited. WadeandRockandWildlife and WadeandRockandPlaces are mostly photoblogs.
