The going is soft but it is a racing certainty that we are going to have a fine time. The Outside Chance is a pub linked to horse racing and we are with our good friends Wills and Nix. This means there are four runners in the field for the Sunday lunch classic…. one maiden, one fine filly, one thoroughbred and one who has been cantering towards the knacker’s yard for some time now.
Wills considers the Sunday lunch racecard and places his first bet on the favourite, Roast Ribeye of Beef – and I do the same. Nix and Rock both select the well fancied Roast Chicken. The meat has to jockey for position on the plate with yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, red cabbage, spring greens, cauliflower cheese and a mix of carrots, beans and peas. This meal is clearly going to be an accumulator.
You can lead a horse to water but he is much more likely to drink beer. Wills and I, both already blinkered, choose to handicap ourselves further with several rounds of Wadworths 6X.
After such a large amount of food and drink there is a brief stewards’ enquiry as to whether anyone has room for dessert. Nix bridles at the prospect but the rest of us gallop on. Wills and I both go for the fabulous Vanilla Pannacotta while Rock chooses the equally delightful Chocolate Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream. Topweight Wills not only clears his pannacotta but, when Rock is pulled up short of the finish line, he also helps with her chocolate brownie.
The only thing we have to think about now is the weigh in!
