Lunch@Leverton&Halls, Bournville

We may be only five miles from the Peaky Blinders’ homeland in Small Heath but we are a world away from the smoke and grime and hard liquor of Tommy Shelby’s pub ‘The Garrison’. Leverton & Halls is an independent deli, café and shop that specialises in fresh, locally sourced organic food.

I don’t have the cheekbones to play Tommy but Rock could easily be Grace. She is beautiful….and would certainly be dangerous with a gun in her hand! Thankfully, the only shots that will be fired today will be camera shots and the nearest we will get to high stakes gambling is trying to pick the very best dishes from the menu!

I choose the Kashmiri Lamb Curry with rice and roti. It is loaded with flavour and packs almost as much heat as a small-time criminal would feel when caught red-handed. Rock goes for the more legitimate Vegetarian Lasagne and salad.

Sadly, there is no hard liquor to be had here. Leverton & Halls is surrounded on all sides by the dry Quaker district of Bournville – where serving alcohol can get you arrested – but they do make a great cup of tea!

Before we make our escape, I cannot resist the guilty pleasure of Christmas pudding – even though we are well into 2015. Hot custard serves as a fine accomplice.

Tommy Shelby probably wouldn’t be seen dead in a place like this but, if you can handle a short stretch without alcohol, it would be a crime not to give it a try.

Wade and Rock are a UK based couple who love good food and wildlife and love travelling to find it. Wade does most, but not all, of the writing and the photography. Rock shares the eating experience and tells Wade when planned posts fall short on sense or style or taste. In the opinion of Wade (and many of our friends) she is also a fabulous baker. WadeandRockandFood mainly consists of reviews of restaurants and pubs we have recently visited. WadeandRockandWildlife and WadeandRockandPlaces are mostly photoblogs.
