Sometimes, due to unforeseen circumstances, plans have to change at the last moment. Instead of meeting friends today, Rock and I have reconstructed our day and we are now looking for somewhere decent to have a quick lunch. We pick the Blue Boar Inn at Longworth. We arrive and the barperson tells us that we may have to wait a while for food. Apparently, normal service standards are being modified as they are short of staff in the kitchen and front of house!
We decide to alter our regular food selection and keep our order simple. We order drinks and a large Proscuitto Pizza (Proscuitto, Red Onion, Mozzarella and Mascarpone) with side salads to share. The strategy almost works – we do have something of a wait but not too long.
The pizza looks fabulous and tastes pretty good but, away from the edges, the base is slightly undercooked. The addition of Mascarpone transforms the topping, giving it a very creamy texture, but an underdone base combined with a creamy topping does not really work for us.
We’ve been to the Blue Boar before and it has been very good. Hopefully, next time – with normal numbers of kitchen and barstaff – we will find it has converted back to its usual high standards.
