Today we are going to visit one of our favourite places and one of the best pubs for food in the UK. The Red Lion at East Chisenbury run by Guy and Brittany Manning. We have our good friends, Wanda and Sid with us, together with their very small offspring Koala and Khid. We just love going to the Red Lion and it’s a developmental experience we really want to share.
Sid and I are both nurturing a desire for an ale. We arrive to find, as usual, a high quality selection of ales on tap including Otter Amber and Stonehenge Eye-Opener. Khid and Koala are each given a children’s menu that includes an outline picture of a lion. They are also given crayons which they are encouraged to use to colour in the pictures. The Red Lion is a role model for any establishment that aspires to cater properly for food lovers and children.
To start, Sid, Rock and I all decide to learn about the Chicken Liver Paté with Madeira Jelly and Toasted Sourdough. Wanda takes a lesson with the Tagliatelle of English peas, Burbage Shiitakes and Aged Parmesan. As ever – the starters are a fabulous education.
Sid, Wanda and Rock now guide themselves towards the Roast Cornish Hake with Braised Gem, English Samphire and Chive Beurre Blanc. I pick the Roast Wild Sea Trout parented with Imam Biyaldi, Crispy Falafel and Mint Labneh. Every morsel of every dish is eaten and enjoyed.
For dessert Sid chooses the Valrhona Chocolate Crémeux with Cocoa Crumbs and Fleur de Sel. Rock and I share the Dressed Berries with Frangipane and Lemon Curd Ice Cream. Khid and Koala both have a Chocolate Brownie Sundae. Dishes and plates are wiped clean.
We are delighted that the Red Lion has lived up to our high expectations – not easy. We have all really enjoyed ourselves here – great company and fabulous food…..a grown-up experience well worth sharing!
