It is always great to entertain friends. We haven’t seen Cali and Bug since we visited them in San Francisco two years ago. Now they are back in the UK and coming here for lunch along with two other good friends Harper and Xena. The menu is almost entirely home-made and Rock’s baking accounts for about half of all the food on offer.
The sun begins to shine and everyone arrives in good time for mid-morning coffee plus the chance to sample Rock’s biscuits. My massive contribution to the first part of the day is to make the coffee. We have been big fans of Three Sixty coffee beans for several months, which I grind immediately before use, to make fresh, fine coffee. Rock has made ginger biscuits and gluten-free peanut butter cookies. Both are beautiful!
My second contribution to the day is the playlist – mainly put on for background – but Xena notices Bowie and Bug picks up on several tracks from Portishead to Jack White. We scroll through some old photos on the iPad and try to remember what happened when and in which order!
Lunch is served promptly as Harper has to escape early. Rock has made a huge salad plus smoked mackerel paté. I have made guacamole and salsa. This is all to accompany Rock’s bread – a fabulous focaccia and a sourdough that has either been sliced thinly and toasted or sprinkled with olive oil and griddled. Rock, Cali and I even take the opportunity to have a beer….
We talk a bit about the past and a lot about the future. There are new, exciting opportunities for all of us of one kind or another. I am having a wonderful day – sunshine, fantastic home baking and fabulous company.
