Lunch@Social Wine & Tapas, Marylebone

We are meeting Rufus & Lani at Social Wine & Tapas in Marylebone for lunch before we all go to see Nicole Kidman in Photograph 51 at the Noel Coward Theatre. Photograph 51 is a new play about scientist Rosalind Franklyn and the part she played in unlocking the secrets of DNA. Social Wine & Tapas is the latest addition to Jason Atherton’s London restaurants and in theory it should match up to our other excellent experiences of his venues.

Ham croquettes, salted cod brandade are served with tankers of Estrella beer and glasses of Cava as we try to decide what to choose from the menu – we pretty much like the sound of everything! For simplicity we go for the full jamon and cheese selection, several elements of Spanish ham and sausage with a fusion of British cheeses, quince jelly and bread. Nowhere near enough bread – we had to order more! Plus a bottle of Priorat, Mas Martinet, Menut – a very good red with complex cherry notes and little acidity which works really well with the food.

Rufus and I still have capacity for more food and we both choose the vanilla poached plums with honey & moscatel jelly and mascarpone ice cream. It is a gentle and perfect contrast to the rich meat, cheese and wine.

Social Wine & Tapas has a really lively atmosphere, the menu is everything you would expect from tapas and therefore quite different from other Jason Atherton ‘Social’ establishments. We have really enjoyed the experiment!

Wade and Rock are a UK based couple who love good food and wildlife and love travelling to find it. Wade does most, but not all, of the writing and the photography. Rock shares the eating experience and tells Wade when planned posts fall short on sense or style or taste. In the opinion of Wade (and many of our friends) she is also a fabulous baker. WadeandRockandFood mainly consists of reviews of restaurants and pubs we have recently visited. WadeandRockandWildlife and WadeandRockandPlaces are mostly photoblogs.
