Lunch@The Red Lion, Cricklade

The rain has finally stopped and we’ve managed to get out for a half decent walk. As lunchtime approaches we head back to The Red Lion in Cricklade. This place is always good for beer and for comfort food. It is the home of the Hop Kettle Brewing Company and also keeps many guest beers on tap.

Today they have both Hare and Rudolf from the Animal Brewing Company and I cannot resist trying the dark Rudolf. It is described as a Cappuccino Stout and made using ‘Silverback’ espresso from Dusty Ape Coffee . It is perfect for my mood. Rock is also planning to be adventurous and chooses the Warrior Queen – a limited edition golden ale from Hop Kettle using Boadicea hops. It is very fine.

We have a little time to enjoy the beer, read the paper and watch the other tables fill before lunch arrives. I have chosen the Red Lion sausages served with mash, shredded cabbage and onion gravy. It is comfort food at its best. Rock is having the line caught mackerel with a mixed salad. Portion sizes are very generous and, despite the fact that we are really enjoying ourselves, neither of us has the capacity to clear our plates.

Great beer, good wholesome food and lovely service from Kathy at the bar.

Wade and Rock are a UK based couple who love good food and wildlife and love travelling to find it. Wade does most, but not all, of the writing and the photography. Rock shares the eating experience and tells Wade when planned posts fall short on sense or style or taste. In the opinion of Wade (and many of our friends) she is also a fabulous baker. WadeandRockandFood mainly consists of reviews of restaurants and pubs we have recently visited. WadeandRockandWildlife and WadeandRockandPlaces are mostly photoblogs.
