An astonishing display of fresh fish and shellfish really ignited our interest in dining at the Severn & Wye Smokery. This smokery supplies some of the finest chefs and food halls in the UK and they have a small restaurant in one corner of their own foodstore.
Before sitting down we have already had a good look at the beers and wines in stock and at all the dishes listed on a variety of boards and slates. I order a bottle of Butty Bach from the Wye Valley Brewery – it is a good choice.
The menu consists entirely of fresh fish, smoked fish and shellfish. Rock has the grilled John Dory fillets with a fennel & citrus salad and salsa verde. She loves it. I have the oven-baked Brixham brill with white bean, coriander, chilli & lime mash and a crispy salad. The brill is absolutely superb – crispy, glowing skin and beautiful white flesh that simply falls off the bone. I’m glad the tasty, exotic mash isn’t too fiery but disappointed that it is intentionally served cold. I would have preferred the mash to be heated and I wanted more of it.
We decide not to delay further but stock up on a number of important essentials from the Smokery foodstore – this is the sort of shopping that I love. Today’s visit has kindled a burning desire in both of us…..we want to be shopping (and eating) here again soon.
