It was the final day of the 2016 Six Nations and England needed to beat France in Paris to secure their first grand slam since 2003. Rock and I are with Sebastian and Rebecca at The West Gate in Bath for dinner and hopefully great seats in front of a live screening of the match.
The pub is packed full of drinkers, diners and rugby fans. The menu is packed full of real pub grub. We have a pre-dinner drink or two to prepare ourselves for the excitement ahead. Fiona shows us to our table and we have a fabulous view of the big screen. To start I have the British pork & Old Speckled Hen sausage roll with apple & date chutney. Seb & Becky share the salt & pepper squid with red pepper mayonnaise and roquito peppers. England have also made a good start with two tries and they are leading 17- 6.
I have the British beef & ale pie with caramelised British beef shin, IPA gravy and triple cooked chips. Rock has falafel, butternut squash and quinoa with coriander, watercress and a buttermilk & mint dressing. While Rock is loving her salad, France have started to make a comeback, now they trail by only two points. The tension is really rising amongst the England fans – maybe it’s time for another drink!
Becky has the buttermilk chicken burger with guacamole, Ayrshire dry cured bacon and smoked mayonnaise. Seb has the Dirty Burger – a 100% beef pattie topped with smoked cheese, chilli con carne, roasted red onions, gherkin & mustard mayo – that really is dirty! England score a third try and finally secure victory 31 – 21.
What a fabulous evening. Great company with Sebastian & Rebecca, great service from Fiona at the very busy West Gate, great pub food, great seats in front of the screen for England’s grand slam victory. If I haven’t mentioned this before, we may have consumed a number of G&Ts, some cider, several beers and a glass of wine or two….
